About KansasCompass

We believe every Kansan deserves to understand what their government is doing — without needing a law degree or hours of free time.

Our Mission

KansasCompass makes Kansas politics accessible and transparent. We track bills moving through the Kansas Legislature, monitor Wichita City Council decisions, and follow local news — then use AI to translate it all into plain language anyone can understand.

Too often, civic information is buried in jargon, scattered across government websites, or locked behind paywalls. We built KansasCompass to change that. Our goal is a single, free tool that helps Kansans stay informed and engaged with the decisions that shape their communities.

What We Do

Bill Tracking

We scrape the Kansas Legislature website daily, capturing every bill, amendment, and committee action so you never miss a change.

AI Summaries

Every bill gets a plain-language summary powered by AI. When a bill changes, we generate a diff summary so you know exactly what shifted.

Local News Monitoring

We aggregate coverage from the Wichita Eagle, Kansas Reflector, Wichita Business Journal, and more — all in one place with AI-generated summaries.

Real-Time Alerts

Watch the bills and topics you care about. Get notified instantly when something changes — by email or in-app.

Open Source & Community

KansasCompass is open source. We believe civic tools should be transparent themselves — you can inspect our code, suggest improvements, or build on top of what we have created. Civic tech works best when it is built by the community it serves.

Whether you are a developer, journalist, advocate, or just a curious Kansan, there is a place for you here. We are always looking for contributors, feedback, and ideas on how to make Kansas government more accessible.
